Arts Benicia
Classes & Workshops

In conjunction with the Third Sunday PASSPORT TO ADVENTURES in BENICIA, artist Kana Tanaka will create a site specific glass installation at Arts Benicia Gallery.

In preparation for Arts Benicia's upcoming exhibit, Looking Glass: seeing through the medium, Tanaka will heat glass "raindrops" one at a time, and allow them to slowly fall from the ceiling of the gallery. When each drop reaches the desired level, she cools the glass to freeze its position.
The Passport program invites residents and visitors to enjoy and learn about the many cultural and historical treasures within this city of 15 square miles and to unite the history and charm of the city's First Street with activities within the Benicia Arsenal. On October 21, from 12 noon to 5 pm, visitors are invited to tour the Benicia Historical Museum, Arts Benicia, the Benicia Fire Museum, and the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park. There will be a nominal admission to the Capitol, all others are free.

Family activities will include a hands-on art project at Arts Benicia, adobe brick building at the Benicia Historical Museum, fire equipment to use at the Fire Museum, and Victorian games at the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park. Passports stamped at two of the four sites can be redeemed for free ice cream at the Benicia Historical Museum at the Camel Barns. After their adventures, visitors can stroll the downtown district to enjoy shopping, dining and the charms of First Street.

These Passport events are sponsored by the four named sites, and the City of Benicia. For further information call 707-746-4202.

The Benicia Historical Museum shares the story of Benicia's place in the history and development of our country. The name, Benicia Historical Museum at the Camel Barns, comes from Benicia's contribution to US Military history. In the 1850's and 1860's, the US Army experimented using camels, imported from the Mideast, as pack animals. After the advent of the Civil War the experiment was abandoned. The remaining camels were shipped to the Benicia Arsenal where they were auctioned to the public. The Museum is located on the second floor of building #9. It is one of the two former storehouses located at the site where the camels were stabled. The Museum contains exhibits and a Gift Shop located above the Charles P. Stone Hall.

Arts Benicia began in 1986 when a small group of art lovers dedicated themselves to expanding the local community’s exposure to and appreciation of the arts. In 1989 Arts Benicia was recognized as a non-profit organization and was designated the official arts body for the City of Benicia.

With 2400 square feet of space in the historic Benicia Arsenal, Arts Benicia has created an Arts Center and Gallery that has become the nucleus of an extensive community of studio artists.

Arts Benicia’s diverse exhibition schedule features the work of many local and regional artists, providing opportunities for artists at many different levels of experience to show and sell their work. The Gallery also hosts numerous cultural events, performances and programs throughout the year.

Through a year round calendar of events, community members of all ages come together to express their creativity and be inspired by that of others.
