| It is said that travel expands the mind, for me it does so much more. It is transformative, it plays with the intensity of my very existence. When I travel I photograph from the gut or in the best instance from the heart. Images made at home or in familiar settings are more about concepts. I am in constant dialog with myself going back and forth ... does it make sense, is the idea frivolous, shallow? Often the image never gets made. Being in a culture without the ability to speak the language, communication gets pared down to gestures, understanding is reached through expression or eye contact. Getting permission to make a photograph involves rawness and risk. I like to photograph from that place of vulnerability, it results in a different kind of image. Its like being tossed into a fast stream - I am not of the water, I am with it. It touches my soul when I feel I have captured the essence of a whole country in the expression of a young boy - when the outward path leads to an interior journey. |
