John was born into an artistically rich environment, his mother being an accomplished pastel and oil portrait artist. His formal training consists of studying under Mexican sculptor Miguel Angel Sanchez in Oaxaca in 1969-70. From that time he has lived all up and down the west side of North America, from British Columbia to Baja California. Some years ago, dissatisfied with what he considered meaningless work, he made a firm commitment to himself to devote his energy to his artwork. This led to a return to Mexico to live for two years, living the art centered life he dreamed of, where he experimented sculpting bas-reliefs in cinder blocks, worked on a Mexican Christ figure in clay and lived a dollar-stretching life. Now dividing his time between living in Ixtlan del Rio, Mexico and the Benicia/Vallejo, California area, he has developed his own unique technique that combines Mexican and North American imagery with papier-mâché to create fascinating objects that have the appearance of archeological treasures. His pieces are in collections in Massachusetts, New York, Florida, Canada and Mexico. |
