Joan Miller was born and raised in San Francisco, CA.

She moved to Solano County in 1994 and made her home in the Benicia/Vallejo area. Photography has been an interest of hers for many years, although she did not begin to seriously pursue photography until several years ago when she bought her first Leica, an M3 made in 1953. Learning the art of photography from masters and lay people over the years has allowed her to mature in her work and appreciate the fine art of film, film developing, and printing.

Artist Statement

A social worker by profession, my training is to observe and to positively frame persons, events, and human scenes. I love photography because it allows me to, literally, see and capture a moment and frame it in a way that I hope others can also appreciate.

I particularly love the stillness and permanence of photographs. The pictures become moments that transcend time, moments that can be old or new, and prized forever. Black-and-white film especially catches this forever feeling, taking both time and technology out of the equation of beauty and leaving the grays and shadows to tell a story.

As an artist Joan has been in two juried exhibits; The Local Voice at the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, CA and the Vallejo Artists Guild Third Juried Exhibit in Vallejo, CA. She has worked photographing christenings, births, children, and portraits. Joan has also done commissions for private parties. Her images are in private collections in the U.S. and are available at Iron Horse Home Furnishings in Benicia, CA.
