| I grew
up in the Hudson Valley of New York State, a place that continues to be
a natural source of inspiration whenever I visit.
I attended the State University of New York, Fredonia campus and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972... needing new experience in an unfamiliar environment, I moved to San Francisco in 1974, and have lived in various places in the Bay Area ever since. |

Painting
for me has been, and is about having, making and providing a visual experience.
Paint...its expressive possibilities my curiosity.
Work begins with a sense of adventure. The idea of a "picture" is suspended in favor of improvised activity, unbridled by intent, content, or narrative: intuitive rather than directed. I want the found image to be ambiguous; suggestive rather than conclusive or referential, at home in its own world, occuplying a palpable space. I prefer to engage the imagination rather than the intellect, thus allowing the viewer to claim his or her own associations. I've drawn inspiration from other creative disciplines; music, not least among them. The visual perceptual world around us is rich in "performance" and constant. This and the issues of our time are assimilated, close at hand; yet, there's still something about apprehanding things abstractly that allows for me, clearer insight into the actual, while not providing answers, but perhaps, a method to arrive ever closer...
