Red & Yellow Lily, 16x20, acrylic painting | Painting for me is like meditation: it challenges me and takes all my focus. What I like best is when I get completely involved in the process and lose track of time; when I stop there is something new and evocative in front of me. When
painting a flower I can begin with something from nature and change it into an abstract
painting. This allows me to work with the formal aspects of art such as composition
& design, patterning, rhythm, and color. The flowers present I begin by choosing a photo, then creating the composition by simplifying the image and cropping in close. First I paint with an undercolor, then a final color and details are added, not necessarily staying true to the original. The colors change from the palette to how they look in the painting. Colors that look dull on the palette can sing on the canvas.
