What is Open Studios?
A: Open Studios is a once-a-year event where artists who live and/or
work from a studio in Benicia invite the public in to see their work
and the environment where much of it is created. It is also a rare opportunity
to meet the artist personally. back
Q2: When did Benicia Artists Open Studios begin?
A: Though there were a few years in the 80’s that artists opened
their doors to the public, the current annual event was organized by
Arthur Herman in 1994.

Q3: Who sponsors Benicia Artists Open Studios?
A: The participating artists contribute a fee to help sponsor Open Studios.
Arts Benicia coordinates additional funding from local businesses, corporate
sponsors and the city of Benicia.

Q4: Who may participate?
A: Artists who live or work in a studio in Benicia are invited to participate.
Participants are encouraged to be Arts Benicia members. Benicia artists
are welcome to host guest artists in their studios.

Q5: How much does it cost to participate in
Open Studios?
A: Entry
fees for Arts Benicia members is $90. The fee covers participation in
a group exhibit at Arts Benicia Gallery, publicity coordination, advertisements
in local newspapers, production of the Open Studios announcement/poster
which lists participating artists and is mailed to approx. 8,000 people,
a listing on the map which will be available at Arts Benicia, additional
signage and website publicity for the event. Arts Benicia members
are encouraged to create a page on our website, which notes Open Studios
participants for each year.

Q6: How can I apply for future Open Studios?
A: You may apply for next year's Open Studios by getting on Arts Benicia’s
Artist mailing list. A good way to do this is by becoming a member.
You will be sent information and an application as well as news on other
Arts Benicia events. Contact Arts Benicia for more info at: 707-747-0131.

Q7: Are there exhibit spaces available to exhibit
my art for Open Studios?
A: Open Studios is a studio venue, which welcomes the public to view
art in the environment of where it was produced; in the intimacy of
the artist's studio. Studio artists may invite guest artists and several
local businesses host artists for the weekend. The artist must arrange
this themselves.

Q8: What is the "Group Exhibit"?
A; The Group Exhibit takes place in the Arts Benicia Gallery, beginning
on Open Studios weekend. It is designed to give people an opportunity
to view art submitted by each participating artist. The viewer may pick
up a map of studio locations and start planning their self-guided tour
of the open studios.

Q9: Where can I get a map?
A: Maps will be available at the Arts Benicia Center Gallery, Benicia
Chamber of Commerce, the Main Street program, and various restaurants
throughout Benicia. *Please note; studios are only open to the
public this one weekend of the year; otherwise by appointment only.

A: Many of the participating artists are listed in the Members Gallery
on this web site. A complete list of the participating artists is posted
online as well.

A: Yes! Benicia Artists Open Studios is free and open to the public.

Q12: Is art available for purchase?
A: Yes! Most participating artists will have their art available for
purchase and the work in the Group Exhibit is all for sale.

Q13: Will artists be available to meet personally?
A: Artists will be in their studios during Open Studios weekend. They
are there to engage with the visitors about their work and the process
of creating it.

Q14: Are the studios open all year?
A: No! Most artists’ studios are not open all year but many are
open by appointment.

Q15: How can I contribute?
A: You may contribute your time, skills, money or space. We are always
in need of help organizing this event. If you have talents or interests
in publicity, hospitality, fundraising, or computer skills, we welcome
your help. It’s fun and a great way to meet great people.
Monetary donations and sponsorships are always needed and appreciated.
If you have a studio or space in your studio that you would like to
share with another artist(s) please let us know.
