Arthur Stern comes out of an American glass tradition, drawing inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prairie School. He has used Wright's geometric glass detailing as a departure point for his own designs. Also a student of the work of German post war glass designers like Schreiter, Schaffrath and Poensgen.  The artist has combined these influences into a unique design sensibility strongly inspired by architecture. He considers himself a designer first and an artist second, and
creates each installation with sensitivity to its specific environment.

The artist also works in other media including works on paper, mixed-media paintings and sculpture. Glass is often incorporated into these autonomous works of art as well.

Working within a family of design or variations on a theme, Stern has used certain geometric symbols and repeating motifs over the years.  Much like a musician, he uses this language as a basis for improvisation. All the work shares a similar evolving design vocabulary.
Arthur Stern studied Architecture at the University of Illinois and Environmental Design at California College of Arts and Crafts. Since 1976, he has owned and operated Arthur Stern Studios, now located in Benicia, California.

The studio has installations throughout the United States as well as in Japan, creating unique and site-specific works of art for residential, commercial and public building projects.

Stern has been widely published and has won numerous awards including several from The American Institute of Architects.
